Houston Food Bank Expansion Project

In the last few years, more neighbors have turned to Houston Food Bank for assistance. The ever increasing demand for household food and basic needs required the Food Bank to take on additional temporary warehouses. With these facilities in place, the Food Bank was able to provide greater assistance proving how much more could be done with expanded facilities.

Now, Houston Food Bank will continue to address the impact of poverty and food insecurity with a collaborative new distribution facility. Thanks to longtime partner Chevron, who donated a 53-acre parcel of land in Northwest Houston in June of 2022, a second Food Bank facility will be located at TX-249 and Ella Blvd.

Our new facility will:

Double our distribution to ~300M lbs. per year by 2035 with ~70% fresh produce.

Create a one-stop destination by co-locating 6 – 10 partner organizations for integrated services.

Provide shared space for neighbors to establish connections and inspire community-wide action geared toward ending the need for food banks.

Provide curbside pickup to 400 families per day by 2028.

Provide home delivery meals to 200 families per day by 2028.

Provide access to 60 lbs. of nutritious food per person to patients of an onsite clinic to improve their health outcomes.

Provide access to 60 lbs. of nutritious food per student participating in onsite education classes to improve their skills to secure a living wage job.

Double the number of unduplicated volunteers from 85,000 (pre-pandemic high) to 170,000 between the new facility and the Portwall location.

When both Houston Food Bank buildings are fully operational, the value of the food we distribute to the Houston community will be $500 million.

Our vision and plan are far more transformative than just more food.

Construction Updates

NOTICE:
As construction is set to begin in April, Houston Food Bank and our building vendors ask that our neighbors begin removing items that they own from the property line.

Houston Food Bank will be hard at work with the expansion of our mission as we begin construction on our second location. We understand the possible impact of construction on our neighbors, as well as the community, and are committed to limiting any disruption to your daily lives by putting a high priority on being courteous to neighbors like you while working in the area.

Construction Activities

  • Contractor clearing equipment moves on site
