Stories of Hunger

Community Kitchen

Olu

Olu, her fiance, and her children moved to Houston a little over a year ago. While she loves it here, it’s much different from her homeland in Nigeria, where she used to be a nurse. Olu was struggling to find work when she heard of the Community Kitchen, and decided to sign up for the program.

“I had applied at different places and people were just turning me away, and it was frustrating. I want to thank the Houston Food Bank for giving me that second chance.

Since coming to the Community Kitchen, I learned a lot of different ways of cooking American food. After I graduated, I got a job working here in the Houston Texans Cafe. Usually I’m the first one here at 5:00 a.m, I check the menu to see what we have and what we need for the day. I cook breakfast and lunch, and I love what I do!

The Houston Food Bank is important because they do a lot for the community. We have the Portwall Pantry where they help working class people.

I really want to thank people who give, because without them there’s no Houston Food Bank. I wouldn’t have a job here without them.”

Olu’s positive attitude and great work ethic has made an impact on her fellow coworkers. She has since transferred to our Community Assistance Program department and works in the Portwall Pantry located onsite at the Houston Food Bank
