Raising Cane’s Crew Sews 1,000 Masks for Houston Food Bank

Popular chicken finger restaurant pays Crew to make masks instead of chicken fingers

HOUSTON (May 18, 2020) – Committed to being an active community partner, Raising Cane’s is finding new ways to give back as part of its “Cane’s In The Moment” initiative.

While the majority of its 500 restaurants are open and serving customers through its drive-thrus, some of its dine-in-only restaurants have shifted operations to support their local communities until they can once again prepare their ONE LOVE® – quality chicken finger meals.

One of the innovative ways Cane’s Crew members have been giving back is by sewing three-ply cloth masks. (See photos here). On May 18, 1,000 of these masks were donated to Houston Food Bank.

“I haven’t ever sewn before but I’m a quick learner and I love being able to do this for my community,” said Raising Cane’s General Manager and Mask Maker Rachael Morgan.

Crew members are being paid to produce the masks, many of whom had never sewn before this initiative began. The teams work in block-schedule shifts in adherence with the company’s social distancing procedures.

“Our team is extremely proud to have the opportunity to step up and support our community in such a unique and meaningful way,” said Houston Leader of Restaurants Jorge Correa. “These Houston Food Bank workers and volunteers are some of the unquestioned heroes of our time, and we are honored to show our appreciation to them with these donations.”

“The need for food assistance has significantly increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Brian Greene, President/CEO of Houston Food Bank. “We’ve ramped up distribution dramatically and are averaging an output of around one million pounds per day. These masks donated by Raising Cane’s will help our dedicated staff and volunteers remain safe and healthy while they work diligently to keep a steady flow of food coming into and distributing out of the warehouse to help our communities during this difficult time.”

Raising Cane’s is also supporting local healthcare workers with its nationwide neck-gaiter campaign. Local Houston and Greater Houston restaurants recently sold out of their limited-edition supply, and 100% of the net proceeds made from these sales will be donated to the Houston Methodist Hospital.

“We have not furloughed any Raising Cane’s Crewmember, in keeping with our company’s mantra ‘No Crewmember Left Behind™,’” said Raising Cane’s Founder & CEO Todd Graves. “Of our 500 restaurants, we have a handful that are closed because they don’t have a drive-thru. We may not be able to serve chicken fingers at these locations, but our Crewmembers are finding creative new ways to serve their communities and the brave men and women that are serving on the frontlines.”

Raising Cane’s always operates with the highest standards of food safety, cleanliness and health, and recently, its restaurants have taken even greater measures. Restaurants will continue to serve Customers via drive-thru.
