December comes around and many of us start to reflect on what the past 12 months have been for us. At the Houston Food Bank (HFB) much growth has occurred for the Government Relations team this past 2023!  Let’s rewind!

Earlier this year we kicked off our work by advocating for the Farm Bill by  informing our communities and elected officials about the importance of this legislation. Our Government Relations Officer, Katherine Byers, headed to our nation’s capital in Washington, DC to advocate for YOU and make sure that HFB and the communities we serve are heard and recognized.

On the state level, our Government Relations Manager,Carolina Cano, worked to accomplish some great wins for the Houston Food Bank in the 88th Texas Legislature.

We partnered with All in Together to host a Community Leadership Program for women from all walks of life to provide resources and avenues to advocate for local issues most important to their community ! As well, we hosted elected officials at HFB to highlight Hunger Action Month (occurs every year in September), and what our community members can do during this month to bring awareness to food insecurity and the root causes of it.

Rising tideAs the year passed, our Government Relations team  doubled in size with the addition of a Policy Analyst and Civic Engagement Coordinator. With the addition of 2 new food bankers to our team, we’ll be able to work together and accomplish much more!

2023 was a year of growth for us, and we hope to continue advocating for YOU and taking our work to the next level!
