The Power of 100,000

By: Brian Greene, President & CEO Date: April 7, 2026

If you’ve ever stepped inside our warehouse on Portwall Street, you know it’s a place of constant motion. It’s a massive, 308,000-square-foot engine on the east side of our city designed for one purpose: to get food to our neighbors who need it most.

But there is a simple truth about this engine that many people don’t realize: It doesn’t work without people like you.

Last year, we saw something incredible. More than 94,000 of you walked through our doors to sort, pack, and move millions of pounds of food. You traded your Saturday mornings, your corporate team-building days, and your spring breaks to stand on our sorting lines.  You were the literal fuel that kept our mission moving.

But as we look at the year ahead, the need in our community is growing, and our engine needs more power. That is why today, during Volunteer Appreciation Month, I am issuing a challenge to our community.

Our Goal: 100,000 Strong

In 2026, we are on a mission to reach an important milestone: 100,000 unique volunteers. Reaching 100,000 isn’t just about a number on a spreadsheet. It’s about the “Operational Truth” of what we do. Every box of produce, every bag of rice, and every senior meal we distribute requires human hands to sort, pack, and prep. We can have the best logistics in the world, but without the energy of our community, the belt doesn’t move.

Will You Be One?

Houston Food Bank is powered by you. It’s powered by the corporate teams who find that they communicate better after they work together or sort a pallet of apples. It’s powered by the families and student heroes who bring a sense of joy and music to the warehouse floor. It’s powered by our faith groups and neighbors who believe that doing good work is better when done together.
