Houston Food Bank Prepares for Hurricane Season, Volunteers Needed to Pack Disaster Boxes – June 1, 2026
WHAT: Houston Food Bank is a resource of hope and help in times of need and disaster, and as hurricane season begins they are calling for volunteers to help sort, process and box food and other necessities for Disaster Boxes to be prepared for immediate disaster response when needed.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome at Houston Food Bank, as individuals or groups. Volunteering is perfect for families and friends, church groups, networking groups and team building for companies. Daily shifts are available, and registration can be done quickly and easily online at HoustonFoodBank.org/volunteer.
Volunteer shifts at Houston Food Bank’s main warehouse facility, 535 Portwall, are:
Morning: Monday – Sunday, 8 am to noon
Afternoon: Monday – Saturday, 1 to 4 pm
Evening: Tuesday – Friday, 6 to 9 pm
Disaster Boxes are packed with nonperishable ready-to-eat items: Vegetables (3); Fruit (2);Protein (3, such as Tuna, Beef Stew, Chili, Canned Chicken, Peanut Butter, etc.); Snacks (2, such as: Granola Bars, Breakfast Bars, etc.); and Water (2); as well as Cleaning supplies including Mop Buckets, Mops, Brooms, Clorox Wipes, Clorox, Garbage Bags and Bug Spray.
Volunteers are welcome to bring non-perishable food donations to the food bank when they come for their volunteer shift. Pull top cans are especially needed for convenience for the recipients.
