Delivering Hope: West Houston Assistance Ministries to Hold Ribbon Cutting for New Refrigerated Van
Houston, TX – August 26, 2025 – West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil its new refrigerated van, a vital addition to its food distribution program that will help deliver nutritious food directly to seniors, the disabled, and families without reliable transportation within a five-mile radius of its headquarters.
As the recipient of a grant from Harris County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Houston Food Bank was able to provide a capacity grant to WHAM for the purchase of the van. The vehicle’s wrap, sponsored by the American Heart Association of Greater Houston, raises awareness of WHAM’s mission and serves as a rolling reminder of the critical services WHAM provides in the community. “Our heart is in serving the most vulnerable in our community, but so often, it is exactly because of those circumstances that they cannot access our food pantry and other critical financial stability programs. Thanks to Houston Food Bank and Harris County, we now have a solution for that problem, because we can now go to them,” said Mark Brown, WHAM’s CEO.
Piggybacking on that thought, Brian Greene, president/CEO of Houston Food Bank added, “In many cases, lack of access to reliable transportation is the biggest factor in keeping people from the available food assistance which they need. By eliminating that hurdle, families and individuals – including children, seniors and veterans – can receive much-needed food and other essentials.”
The refrigerated van will enable WHAM to feed 40–50 families each week who would otherwise be unable to access food pantries due to age, disability, or a lack of transportation. It also extends WHAM’s ability to serve as a hub for food distribution in West Houston, reaching more people with fresh, healthy foods and essentials.
The ribbon-cutting event will bring together donors, community partners, WHAM board members, staff, and local media to celebrate this milestone in WHAM’s mission to serve families in crisis and to build a stronger, healthier community.
