Stories of Hunger - Delilah

Delilah

When you visit the doctor’s office, you often leave with a prescription for medication, physical therapy, or other treatments recommended by your doctor.

For some neighbors, it might even be a food prescription (Food Rx) as part of a unique partnership between the Houston Food Bank and some local healthcare providers. Through this innovative program, eligible neighbors can receive a Food Rx from a participating partner or by committing to a Community Health Program that improves their overall well-being.

Delilah received a Food Rx after visiting a Suvida Healthcare clinic. She was able to redeem her food prescription at one of our Food for Change Markets, where she could select 30 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus four additional nutritious items, at no cost to her.

“I depend on good food and balanced meals with fresh fruits and vegetables,” says Delilah, a breast cancer survivor who also has kidney issues. “This is what the Houston Food Bank provides for me, and I appreciate it.”

As a senior, Delilah lives on a limited budget, and says the Food Rx is a big help.

“I only receive Social Security, so this helps supplement my income,” she says. “Seniors need all the help they can get, believe me! If we didn’t have this food, I don’t know what we’d do. We depend on this. It means so much to me!”
