Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen is a 12-week culinary training program that provides participants with on the job training, ServSafe certification, job readiness and life skills coaching to help secure jobs in the culinary field and promote self-sufficiency.

Community Kitchen at the Houston Food Bank is a 12-week job training program for adults 18 and over. The program provides 4 job training components: culinary fundamentals, SERV Safe certification, job readiness and life and career coaching.

Students will learn in a variety of different ways; through practicing daily cooking skills in a working kitchen to learning classic culinary technique and terminology in a classroom. A student advisor will work daily with the students and offer coaching, resume writing workshops, mock interviews and help with job search.

Classes taught by an array of professionally trained chefs, culinary professionals, nutrition specialists and guest chefs.

New classes start every 8 weeks.

Program Services and Benefits:

  • Transportation assistance via a bus pass or gas card
  • A monthly stipend of $200 given during the duration of the 3-month program

Requirements to Ensure Successful Participation:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Have a personal or physical barrier that has prevented you from securing gainful employment
  • Agree to take and pass a drug test and random testing throughout program
  • Agree to take and pass a background check
  • Have enthusiasm and interest in the food service industry
  • Live in a reliable housing environment
  • Be able to attend classes Monday- Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., some evenings for special events.
