WIC Formula Shortage: Resources and Updates

A recall of baby formula has severely impacted the supply chain, with Texas facing some of the greatest shortages.

A mother stands in her home embracing her young infant daughter with a kiss on her cheek.

As a result of the recall, many of the 200,000 families on WIC in Texas who usually rely on benefits received to pay for formula are struggling to find WIC-approved formula in stock and/or spending money out-of-pocket on expensive formula.

Texas WIC understands the struggles that families are facing during the nationwide formula supply shortage and Abbott formula recall, and are working towards providing a variety of solutions. It is a coordinated effort between local WIC staff, stores that accept WIC, and families to them what they need.

Families needing specialty formula…

    .
Since these are highly specialized formulas, a health care provider must be consulted to ensure the formula will meet the infant’s medical needs. Doctors may provide verbal instructions for changing formulas over the phone to WIC staff. Generic hypoallergenic formulas are also now available.
