RAC Grant recipient Hearts and Hands Baytown received a new forklift.

Every day, local nonprofit partners serve as the critical link between rescued food and the neighbors who need it most. Through the Walmart Retail Agency Capacity Grant, awarded by Walmart and Feeding America, Houston Food Bank invested in strengthening our agency partners’ ability to conduct direct retail pickups, expand food rescue efforts, and increase access to nutritious food across Southeast Texas.

What may appear to be a simple piece of warehouse equipment has created a ripple effect reaching families across the community. Hearts and Hands of Baytown explains its impact best:

Hearts and Hands of Baytown serves individuals and families experiencing food insecurity and economic instability throughout Baytown and surrounding communities, with expanding outreach into Chambers County and Pasadena. The organization supports a diverse population, including families with children, older adults living on fixed incomes, individuals with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, and households facing transportation and mobility barriers.

Their mission is to share the love of Christ through the work of their hands, nourishing their neighbors, restoring dignity, and building stability. Guided by their values of Faith, Compassion, Respect, and Health & Nutrition, Hearts and Hands takes a holistic approach to food assistance. Through programs such as their Client Choice Fresh Market, Food for Change, Doorstep Blessing, and Paula’s Pantry, they provide access to nutritious food while also connecting individuals and families to benefits, resources, and other services that can help create greater stability.

As their outreach continues to grow, having the right equipment has become essential to their ability to safely and efficiently handle the increased volume of food they receive and distribute. The forklift provided to Hearts and Hands of Baytown from Houston Food Bank has significantly strengthened their warehouse capacity and has become an important part of their daily operations.

“The gift of our forklift has transformed the way we move food throughout Hearts and Hands of Baytown. From quickly unloading large pallets of rescued food from our extensive network of retail partners, to loading our spoke agencies on major distribution days, to safely moving fresh food into our walk-in cooler for proper storage, the impact is felt every single day.

What may look like a piece of equipment is truly a tool of ministry. It allows our team to work safer, faster, and more efficiently, increasing our ability to rescue, store, and distribute more food to the people who need it most. Because of this, we can better serve and reach more families throughout our community.

This gift has strengthened our ability to carry out our mission of nourishing our neighbors, restoring dignity, and building stability. The impact reaches far beyond our warehouse—it reaches every family and individual who is nourished by the food this equipment helps us move.”
