Houston Food Bank Accepts Bulk Protein Donations

In the years since first beginning operations, Houston Food Bank has constantly evolved and expanded how we address food insecurity. One way we have grown is by expanding the different types of foods that we are able to accept as donations, to address the many different needs of our community. Proteins, and other perishable foods are highly requested items in our community. In recognizing these needs Houston Food Bank has installed a Protein Pack Room, which greatly expands our access to these types of items.
Houston Food Bank is one of the few food banks in the country that has access to a Protein Pack Room, our in-house USDA certified clean room. This allows for the repackaging of proteins that are packaged in large quantities, from 20lb boxes to 1,000lb totes, in a safe and controlled manner. These bulk packed proteins are perfectly usable, however, the size is not effective for sharing directly to our neighbors. By breaking down these donations into smaller portions, we can both provide more usable portions to recipients and widen our impact by sharing with more neighbors in need. This allows us to receive many different donation opportunities that other food recovery organizations may not be able to handle.
