Sonja
Sonja moved to Houston two and a half years ago to be closer to her daughter and family. A proud grandmother and avid gardener, she enjoys spending time with her loved ones while prioritizing something equally important: her health.
“I love love love my grandchildren. They make me laugh and smile every day.”
Living with diabetes and managing a tight budget, Sonja has embraced healthier habits and a plant-based diet. The changes she has made are helping her build the healthy future she wants for herself and her family.
Through the DAWN (Diabetes and Wellness Network) Center, one of Houston Food Bank’s partners, Sonja has found support to help improve her health and stay on track with her goals. There, she participates in wellness classes, meets with specialists, and receives fresh produce, protein and pantry staples twice a month.
Houston Food Bank supplies that food through its partnership with DAWN, making healthy foods more accessible. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) also helps Sonja afford additional fruits and vegetables at the grocery store. Together, these resources help ensure she has access to the nutritious foods she needs to continue the progress she has worked so hard to achieve.
Reflecting on the impact these programs have had on her life, Sonja said:
“What they’re doing here is powerful to helping people live a better quality of life in terms of mobility, in terms of chronic disease, in terms of all of that. I’m blessed to be a part of these programs that are helping me to meet my goals as well.”
As she continues her health journey, Sonja is working toward becoming a wellness coach so she can share what she has learned with others. It’s a way of giving back and helping others on similar journeys because, as she says, “It takes a whole community to take care of the community.”
