A Community United Through School Market

As a School Market Coordinator, Dr. Dean D. Guerra, Ed.D. has seen the growing gap between wages and living costs place a heavy burden on his community. But twice a month, at Waller ISD, he sees the strength and generosity of that same community lift that burden off their neighbors.
Some begin lining up at 5 a.m., four hours before the market opens. Dr. Guerra’s team of student and adult volunteers is there, too. “Remember why you’re here today,” he reminds them.
It’s not just a food distribution. “This is a community event,” Dr. Guerra said. It is a place where neighbors are recognized, generations connect, students shine, and families and students feel supported. “The market really provides us a beacon of hope.”
When Houston Food Bank’s truck arrives, Guerra’s team springs into action — assessing food quality and calculating portion sizes. Upbeat music fills the space, energy builds, and the guests start filing in. Students are paired with a neighbor to assist in selecting fresh, nutritious foods and helping pack their car.
At Waller ISD, food is the starting point for something even deeper: dignity, belonging, and hope.
