School & Youth Groups

The Houston Food Bank welcomes school and youth groups to help us sort and package food while passing along the value of volunteerism to the younger generation.

Student volunteers at the Houston Food Bank

We love to have students volunteer with us and welcome school and youth groups to sign up for one of our regularly scheduled shifts on Monday – Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Because safety is our paramount concern, all volunteers must meet following expectations:

  • Minors must be at least 6 years old to volunteer in the Portwall Warehouse
  • Minors must be 16 years old to volunteer in the Keegan Kitchen.
  • We require at least 1 adult/chaperone per 5 volunteers 13 and under and 1 adult/chaperone per 10 volunteers 14 and up.
  • Adults/chaperones are required to supervise minors at all times.
  • Volunteer dress code: long shorts or pants, shirts with sleeves and closed-toe shoes.

.

Verification of Student Volunteer Hours:

In order for the Houston Food Bank to verify student hours for schools or online verification sites, a student must either:

  • Create a Volunteer Profile.
  • Register in advance for a volunteer shift and SCAN-IN with the Confirmation Email QR code.
    • For multiple shifts on the same day, scanning-in is required for EACH SHIFT. By using this method, volunteer hours reports are always available for you to print directly from your Volunteer Profile.
  • At the end of your shift, request an official embossed “Hours Verification Letter” from the Welcome Desk. If this option is chosen, we will NOT be able to verify those hours without assessing the original documents.
