A dedicated group of individuals who regularly donate their time to lead projects in collaboration with HFB. These leaders contribute to almost every facet of the organization, helping us provide food for better lives.

The Apple Core Team is a vital group of dedicated volunteers who help power the Houston Food Bank’s operations. We welcome adults from all backgrounds and professions to join us — whether volunteering daily, weekly, or monthly. As an Apple Core Leader, you will support our mission by assisting with clerical projects, guiding production teams, managing essential support tasks, and serving as a Food Bank ambassador in the community. Your time and dedication help ensure we can continue providing for those in need.
Mission:
The mission of the Apple Core Program is to create impactful and empowering volunteer experiences for individuals passionate about advancing the Houston Food Bank’s mission. Whether leading volunteer teams, managing volunteers, or collaborating with community partners, ACLs play a critical role in fostering connection and driving positive change. Grounded in our core values, we are committed to delivering exceptional service and building a stronger, more resilient community together.
Apple Core Leaders are divided into 3 groups, based on their Volunteer Interest:
ACL Ambassadors
Ambassadors play a crucial role in engaging with the community, spreading awareness, and fostering support for our initiatives through various outreach activities, such as Community Outreach and Tabling and Public Speaking Engagements.
ACL Support Team
The Support team provides clerical and administrative support to ensure the smooth operation of our programs and services. These volunteers commit to long-term service, taking on individual projects or consistent volunteer roles within various departments.
ACL Experienced Leaders
The Experience Leaders are the backbone of the Houston Food Bank’s volunteer workforce. These ACLs receive comprehensive training and coaching to become certified project experts, leading the production-level aspects of our operations. ​Duties include overseeing and guiding volunteer teams during food sorting, packing, and distribution activities.
Apple Core Leaders’ REQUIREMENTS include:
- Must be at least 18 years of Age
- Dedicate a consistent amount of time each week or month, depending on your schedule and the needs of the department you’re interested in.
- Serve a long-term commitment, at least 6 months of service, providing stability and continuity to the Houston Food Bank’s operations.​
Apple Core Leaders’ BENEFITS include:

- ​Annual ACL recognition event, including Presidential Volunteer Service Award.​
- ​Serving alongside a community of like-minded people.​

Steps to become an ACL:
- Attend an ACL Interest Meeting at the Food Bank with the Volunteer Liaison
Join us for an introductory meeting with our Volunteer Liaison to learn more about the ACL role and responsibilities. - Complete the Online ACL Application
After attending the ACL Interest Meeting, you will receive an online application form to fill in. This includes signing waivers and submitting a background check for approval. - Experience Different Volunteer Opportunities
Before becoming an inducted ACL, we will invite you to special volunteer initiatives and meetings with our various departments to learn more about the Food Bank and explore different interests.
- Register for a Training Session at the Food Bank
Sign up for an ACL Training Session where you will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to support our mission effectively. - Attend the ACL Induction Day!
Join us on ACL Induction Day to complete your training and officially become an ACL. You are now ready to start volunteering with our amazing team!

Upcoming ACL Onboarding Sessions:
Interest meetings are held weekly to provide ample opportunity for new ACLs to be involved. Depending on your area of interest, you can begin serving in little as a month. Our induction days are our public announcements to large volunteer crowds about the program and highlighting our new members.
