Stories of Hunger

Food insecurity is an opportunity of hope over hunger

Dane

Dane is living out of his car as he completes his college education. Your support of the Houston Food Bank is the reason why he isn’t going hungry.

Dane, a hardworking college student determined to get his degree, has faced his share of challenges along the way.

He says, “I go to college down the street, and I live in my car. I don’t have family out here, so I don’t have people that are going to hold me up. I have to be my own sole supporter.”

Even though Dane has a job while he attends school, the money he makes isn’t enough to cover his tuition and day-to-day expenses. That’s why he feels fortunate that the Houston Food Bank supports a local food pantry, where he is served food with the dignity he deserves.

“Throughout my experience of going to school and working, I’ve had some moments where I hit rock bottom; where I just can’t afford to get through. That’s when I come here, in my time of need. They are always willing to help me. They even helped me get some gasoline for my car while I was here.”

Dane is grateful that, no matter how tough times get, he can always receive healthy, nutritious food to sustain him and allow him to focus on reaching his goals. “Everything this place provides is a total blessing. I have nothing but respect for these people here, because they go up, over and beyond to make sure that the people that need help have it.”

“Thank you to all of the people who take care of the ones that need help. You’re beautiful. That love is what sustains us, and makes the world go round.”

As school starts up again, Dane’s story shows that it’s not just young children who experience hunger and need nourishing food to succeed in their studies. So many people in our community are struggling each and every day. But thanks to you, our neighbors throughout southeast Texas can receive nutritious meals and hope in their time of need.
