TEFAP - The Emergency Food Assistance Program

Food Emergency? TEFAP sites can help!

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of people with limited income while navigating an emergency by providing food at no cost, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Food includes USA-grown free, nutritious items like fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains. How to access TEFAP pantry sites in our 18-county service area:

  1. Use Houston Food Bank’s Find Food Now tool and click MORE INFORMATION under each listing. Look for TEFAP in the information box & call the site to learn their specific TEFAP distribution dates & requirements.
  2. Go to the selected location during their listed hours of operation & be sure to ask to apply for The Emergency Food Assistance Program.
  3. Meet with a staff member at the location to complete the process.
    • You will need to provide: your name, home address, phone number, current public assistance received, & total household income before getting emergency food.
  4. Staff at your location will provide further instructions for food pick up. Pending availability, you may be able to leave with TEFAP food the same day. Staff members and volunteers at the site will be available to answer questions and assist with loading food into vehicles if needed.

TEFAP food offerings at each site may include additional food that individual sites have purchased or received through donations in their community.
