Backpack Blast is Houston Food Bank’s annual clay shooting tournament with a powerful purpose. This isn’t just a day of friendly competition, it’s a vital effort to support children who lack enough food when school meals aren’t available. Over the past ten years, thanks to generous supporters like you, Backpack Blast has raised over $2.3 million and provided more than 800,000 backpacks filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food. Each backpack means a child has one less weekend to worry about going hungry.
Now in its 11th year, Backpack Blast 2025 had 35 teams from various sectors, raising $402,115! This included not only the sponsored teams, but also a raffle for valuable donated prizes and a live auction that featured Houston Rockets tickets, a Hotel Zaza luxury weekend, and much more.
Backpack Blast supports Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy program. One in four children in southeast Texas faces food insecurity, meaning they don’t have consistent access to enough nutritious food. While many of these children rely on free or reduced-price school meals during the week, they often go home to little or no food on weekends and holidays.
The Backpack Buddy Program bridges this critical gap by providing nutritious, child-friendly food for students to take home every Friday during the school year. These weekend food packs ensure that vulnerable children have the nutrition they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
