School/Youth Volunteer Opportunities

“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.”

-- Sherry Anderson.

We love to have students volunteer with us often and offer school/youth group shifts on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Volunteer Group

Because safety is our paramount concern, all volunteers must meet following expectations:

  • Minors must be at least 6 years old to volunteer in the Warehouse and 16 years old to volunteer in the Keegan Kitchen.
  • We require at least 1 adult/chaperone per 10 minors. If this ratio cannot be met, we are happy to help you reschedule.
  • Adults/chaperones are required to supervise minors at all times.
  • Volunteer dress code: long shorts or pants, t-shirts or shirts with sleeves and wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals or flip flops – no exceptions).

NOTE: Your shift is not confirmed until you receive a HFB confirmation and the required paperwork.

Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks before your desired date. To check our school/youth group shift availability, please provide the following information:

NOTE: Your shift is not confirmed until you receive a HFB confirmation and the required paperwork.

For more information, or to register, please contact Brittnee Hubbard.

After your group’s registration is confirmed, we will provide a Service Trip Waiver and Minor Waiver Forms to complete in advance following these steps:

  • Complete the Service Trip Waiver Form in Excel and email it as an attachment to Brittnee Hubbard at least three days before your volunteer shift.
  • Print a copy of the completed log and bring it in with you the day you come to volunteer. If you have minors who come on that day who are NOT on the form, please let us know when you arrive.
  • Bring completed Minor Waiver Forms with parent/guardian signatures with you the day you volunteer. MINORS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO VOLUNTEER WITHOUT A COMPLETED WAIVER FORM.

In order for the Houston Food Bank to verify student hours for schools or online verifying systems, a student must either:

  • Create a Volunteer Profile in our online Civicore system, register in advance and SCAN-IN with the Confirmation Email QR code.  For multiple shifts on the same day, scanning in is required for each in order to log hours.
  • Request an official (embossed) Hours Verification Letter at the end of the shift, available at our Welcome Desk.  If this option is chosen, we will NOT be able to verify those hours without having it presented to food bank staff in person.
