Fact Sheet
Operation Frontline
Program Overview
The Houston Food Bank’s Operation Frontline is a national nutrition education and financial literacy program developed by Share Our Strength to address the root causes of poverty and hunger in the United States. Increased knowledge of nutrition, cooking, food budgeting and food safety allow low-income individuals to better provide nutritious food for themselves and their families.
Through a variety of free six-week courses hosted at Houston Food Bank member agencies, adults, children, and families can learn how to stretch limited resources and move towards securing a healthy lifestyle. Courses include: Kids Up Front, Side by Side, The Power of Eating Right, Eating Right, Comer Bien, Eating Well, and Saving Smart…Spending Smart.
Local chefs, dietitians/nutritionists, and financial planners volunteer to teach people the skills they need to make healthy food choices on a low-income budget. Each class focuses on a specific theme, such as healthy snacking, stretching food dollars, food safety, and eating more fruits and vegetables. Chefs and other volunteers create low-cost recipes for participants to learn and try at home. Participants in the course are given the ingredients they need to prepare the recipes at home with their family.
