Do you have the fire in your heart to burn out hunger?
The Houston Food Bank Hunger Game is a two-week competition in which participants come together as a group to collaborate and compete against others in the Houston community. The overall goal of the competition is to produce the most meals possible for the Houston community by volunteering, fundraising and hosting a food drive. The group that produces the most “meals” will be crowned champion for the season and win prizes.
Who can participate?
Participants may include churches, school groups, families, corporate groups, fraternities/sororities and many others! Participants can form groups of any size. The overall winner will be decided using a meal per participant standard, so don’t worry if your group is smaller in size! Each group must choose a captain to register the group and mobilize the other group members into action.
When is the Hunger Game?
The Hunger Game competition will last for two weeks, beginning on August 2, 2015 and concluding on August 15, 2015. However, captains must register their groups prior to the competition, anytime between July 5, 2015 and August 1, 2015. During the two-week competition, group members or full groups are encouraged to volunteer at one of the Houston Food Bank’s two locations: Portwall and Keegan Kitchen.
- Portwall location shifts: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
- Keegan Kitchen shifts: 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 - 2:30 p.m.
How does it work?
Volunteering Groups are highly encouraged to volunteer as much as possible from August 2nd -15th in order to maximize their total meal count. The formula for volunteering is 1 hour (per person) = 60 meals. Volunteering is the quickest way to amass a high meal count for your group.
Food Drive Captains must sign up for a food drive online on HFB’s website. HFB will provide boxes and bins for food drives that can be picked up at the Portwall location. Once the food drive is complete, captains must schedule a delivery date and time before or on August 15th to the Portwall location. Boxes will only be picked up if there are at least 8 full bins worth of food. Food items will be weighed upon arrival and tallied into the final meal count. Remember, poundage divided by 1.2 equates to meals.
Fundraiser Organizations, companies, and participants may directly support the fundraiser with donations. Monetary donations from the fundraiser may be collected in creative boxes made by groups. Online donations can also be made. The total monetary donation must be turned in by the captain to the Portwall location before or on August 15th. The monetary donation formula is $1 = 3 meals.
What can your group win?
The winning group will receive a prize, social media posts, and photo wall recognition. Winners will also be featured in the Houston Food Bank e-Newsletter highlighting their cause and reason for choosing to help the Houston Food Bank.
