Current legislation
Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization of 2009
- President Obama is committed to ending childhood hunger by 2015.
- A major step toward this goal will be by increasing funding by at least $1 billion in the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization coming up this fall.
- This legislation includes all the Federal child nutrition programs, including the School Breakfast and the National School Lunch Programs, the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
The Houston Food Bank sees this reauthorization as a great opportunity to improve these programs at the federal level. The Food Bank would like to see a well-conceived, adequately funded reauthorization bill that reduces hunger and food insecurity, improves child health, and enhances development and school readiness not only in Texas, but across the country. As such, the Houston Food Bank supports:
- Increased access to school food programs for underserved children and communities;
- Enhanced nutritional quality of food provided; and
- Modernized technology to make it easier for families to apply for, and receive, benefits.
