Souper Bowl of Caring
Many people believe they have done their part when they donated or hosted a food drive during the holiday season. But the reality is: hunger is an issue for 365 days of the year.
This is how Souper Bowl of Caring started 25 years ago in Columbia, SC. We wanted to take a time when consumption was high, competitive spirit was in the air – but food bank and food pantry shelves were emptying after the holiday season.
In 1990, a youth group came together and thought: “Even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.” They rallied their friends and other groups from across their community and raised just over $5,000. 100 percent went to local hunger and poverty relief organizations chosen by each group.
And we have stayed true to our first collection 25 years ago. We have national and local youth training boards that are able to help us rally participants across the nation and lead movements to help tackle the issues of their communities. Since 1990, we have generated over 106 million in cash and food items for charities across the United States.
Last year, $8.4 million was raised nationally. $2.4 million of that was raised just in Houston, which is more than any other city in the United States. A large percentage of that came right here to the Houston Food Bank because people recognize their ability to convert cash into meals and distribute food to where it’s needed most.
Three very special Souper Bowl of Caring partners have all chosen the Houston Food Bank to benefit from their drives. H-E-B, Kroger and Randalls all put away their swords for Souper Bowl of Caring and come together to make it easy for the Greater Houston community to participate and give. They sell hunger bags in their stores and allow customers to make a cash donation at the register. Remember, $1 = 3 meals.
$1 is not a lot – but can make a huge impact. And that’s what Souper Bowl of Caring is all about. It’s projected that 150 million people will tune in to watch the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in the Big Game. What if each of them gave just $1 to help tackle hunger in the United States? We could make huge plays in the fight against hunger and poverty.
One dollar. One can. At a time.
Thanks for listening! I wanted to let you know that it’s not too late for you to make a play this year! All you have to do is:
- REGISTER your group at www.tacklehunger.org
- COLLECT between now and February 1, 2015
- REPORT your collection online to be counted in the local and national numbers
- DONATE 100% of your collection to the charity of your choice
And even if you can’t host your own drive, I encourage you to make a donation at your local grocery store – or even spend some time volunteering.
I cannot wait to see what Houston will do this year! I know we will surpass our goal of collecting 2.5 million meals.
