How You Can Help This Holiday Season

Did you know October through December is the busiest time of the Food Bank’s year? This year, we will distribute more than 22,000 holiday boxes containing chicken, canned goods and fresh produce to individuals and families in need. And we will distribute millions of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to our partner agencies for hungry Houstonians. But we couldn’t do it – any of it – without the generous support of the community! There are many ways you can help this time of year but I wanted to highlight a few you might not be familiar with.

First, are you aware the Houston Food Bank offers holiday cards? Created by one of our very talented staff members each year, we offer a number of designs and the cards are available either as standard, packaged cards with a pre-printed message or as honor cards, so you can send us your mailing list and we’ll custom-print the interior of the card and do all the work for you to get them in the mail on time!

The holiday season is also our most popular time for food and fund drives. Many people don’t realize how expensive transporting food drive collections can be for the Food Bank. If you’d like to hold a food/fund drive for your office, church or other group, please consider working with someone like Move for Hunger or your neighborhood food pantry to maximize the efficiency of your drive. We can also create an online donation form to accept credit card donations for your drive. Yolanda Alexander would be happy to create a donation form just for your group.

While you’re doing your shopping for holiday gifts, don’t forget there are plenty of ways to support the Food Bank while you shop through programs like AmazonSmile, iGive, BeautyKind, and more.

But money is certainly not the only way to give this time of year! During our busiest season, volunteers are needed more than ever, especially on weekdays. The holiday season does offer some unique opportunities to help, such as the Share Your Holidays box distribution, in addition to the ongoing need for volunteers to help with sorting food, packing family boxes, and other year-round tasks.

However you can help this year, please know that we are incredibly grateful! This year, your support caused us to be voted Feeding America’s Food Bank of the Year and we owe it all to you!
