f.r.e.s.h. young professionals {feed.respond.educate.socialize.houston} launched in June to support the Houston Food Bank’s mission. Our 120 plus members are socially conscious young professionals and are motivated to take action and bring awareness to the issue of hunger through fundraising, advocacy, social and volunteer efforts.

The group is actively developing unique opportunities for the upcoming months. The programming will be a mix of social, educational, and service – a combination that will leverage the Food Bank’s existing partnerships. Many of the opportunities are accessible only to members like the upcoming Helpie during the Share Your Holidays phone bank, shop on a SNAP budget with Scott McClelland, and healthy cooking classes with local chefs. f.r.e.s.h. is also looking forward to hosting events that partner with other local YP groups.

Membership to the group is being offered at the introductory rate of $50 a year, and provides exclusive member access to all f.r.e.s.h. events and discounts to events including Soundbites and other HFB events.  To keep up to date on exciting upcoming events and access to these unique opportunities make sure to join f.r.e.s.h.

What have f.r.e.s.h. members been up to? On September 18th a group of nearly 200 young professionals gathered at the Food Bank for “Helpie Hour,” a night of volunteering and happy hour. The volunteers sorted food on the carousel and packed backpacks for the Backpack Buddy program. They were able to do a lot of good in 90 minutes. Afterwards the group mingled over dinner and drinks in the HFB Lobby.

On Sunday, November 9th. The Houston Food Bank loading dock was rocking as f.r.e.s.h. presented Soundbites, a concert fundraiser. Soundbites featured music from Austin bands Quiet Company, O Conqueror, and Houston-favorite Jealous Creatures, as well as beers from local breweries, food from top-notch food trucks, and treats from Nothing Bundt Cakes and Green Plate Foods.

Everyone is excited about the impact f.r.e.s.h. is having on the Food Bank and within the community. Our CEO, Brian Greene, hopes that our f.r.e.s.h. members treat the Food Bank as their “playground.” Exploring how they as an individual can use their skills or expertise to benefit the Food Bank.  We can’t wait to see how much impact our f.r.e.sh. members will have at the Food Bank as their “play” ramps up!
