HOUSTON FOOD BANK NAMED 2015 MEMBER OF THE YEAR BY FEEDING AMERICA
Recognition for Efforts in Raising Awareness and Engagement to Fight Hunger
CHICAGO, April 24, 2015 – The Houston Food Bank was named the 2015 Member of the Year at the Feeding America National Executive Directors' Forum in Scottsdale, Arizona yesterday. The award is given to the year's most outstanding food bank of the more than 200 food banks across the nation in the Feeding America network.
Award recipients are recognized for playing an instrumental role in improving the communities they serve through: creative, efficient and successful programs and services; serving as a strengthening force for the entire Feeding America network; and exemplifying the highest standards of operations.
The award was presented by Danny Flores of H-E-B., one of the largest independent food retailers in the nation and a longtime donor and supporter of the Feeding America network.
“As a proud member of the Feeding America network, the Houston Food Bank routinely turns to its network peers for inspiration and as it strives to live its mission: Leading the fight against hunger. The food bank has strong alignment with Feeding America network values and actively incorporates great ideas from other food banks in the network. They also actively share their innovations with the network and other partners,” Flores said.
“The Houston Food Bank is being recognized as member of the year 2015 for it commitment to community engagement, increasing the number of nutritious meals distributed to clients, and continuous improvement to operational efficiency.”
“Feeding more hungry children is another key priority for the Houston Food Bank. Its Backpack Buddy program continues to expand, now providing weekend food sacks to more than 10,000 children in 500 schools.”
“The retail pick up program, launched in 2007, has had double-digit increases in average monthly pounds received the past two fiscal years. It currently collects from more than 260 stores, 73 of them serviced by 34 partner agencies and PDOs.”
“The Houston Food Bank serves as a network leader, frequently hosting other food banks to learn more about their innovative programs, and is also an international collaborator, working with the Global FoodBank Network.”
“Houston Food Bank is honored to receive recognition from Feeding America, our partner in the fight against hunger,” said Brian Greene, Houston Food Bank president/CEO. “The Houston Food Bank is simply a reflection of outstanding support by our community. We strive to live up to their expectations for excellence as we provide millions of nutritious meals each year for hungry children, women and men in southeast Texas. On behalf of our board of directors and staff, we offer gratitude for this moment in the spotlight. Our ongoing hope is that the light continues to illuminate the need here and across the country for relief from hunger.”
