A Message from Our CEOBrian Greene in the warehouse

Each week, 80,000 people are able to stave off hunger – even if only for a little while – with food that comes to them through the Houston Food Bank. Annually, we feed nearly half a million different people who are directly served by 400 hunger relief agencies throughout our 18-county service area.

Those figures point to an appalling fact: on any given day, it’s estimated that 33,000 people experience the gnawing pain of hunger. They have difficulty focusing on tasks. They have trouble sleeping. They are at risk of health problems. All because they don’t have enough to eat.

At the root of hunger is poverty. Poor people, by definition, don’t have the resources they need to pay for the most basic necessities. They often must make terrible choices: Keep a roof over their heads, or buy food. Pay the utility bill, or fill their children’s stomachs. Buy prescription medicine, or eat.

With the help of thousands of Community partners, the Houston Food Bank is leading the fight against hunger by providing food, nutrition education, job training, and strategic expertise. We can only tackle the problem of hunger by collaborating with others who can help make a difference – human service and governmental agencies, the food industry, corporations, foundations, educational institutions, and individuals who contribute food, money, knowledge and time.

On this website, you will find information about what we do, and how you can help. I invite you to join us in the fight against hunger. If you’d like to contact me to share ideas or offer help, please e-mail me at bgreene@houstonfoodbank.org, or call me at 713-547-8602. I look forward to hearing from you.
